One of the FemtoSurf project applications is self-cleaning based on superhydrophobicity and high water contact angles. A drop of water is almost spherical on the surface and rolls off taking the dirt away with it. Superhydrophobicity was achieved on the aluminum sample shown in this video using femtosecond laser surface microstructuring. The difference between textured and non-textured samples is incredible! Can you imagine what impact such surface property could have, for example, on aviation industry?
